GL Assessment strengthens pupils' thinking skills to improve literacy

GL Assessment has unveiled Let’s Think Through Literacy! on stand R11 at The Education Show, a programme designed to support nine to 11-year-olds in the development of key thinking skills that will help boost their achievement in literacy.

The Let’s Think Through Literacy! teachers’ guide is the latest in GL Assessment’s highly successful series based on the well-researched learning process of cognitive acceleration. With cognitive acceleration, the teacher sets their pupils a task that is beyond their current level of understanding and encourages them to work together, asking questions and discussing their ideas, in order to find a solution.

Andrew Thraves, Group Head of Publishing at GL Assessment says: “A child’s achievement in literacy is essential to their progress across the curriculum. Teachers that use the cognitive acceleration teaching method in their lessons have found pupils are more confident in their ability, and participate more enthusiastically in the classroom; resulting in greater achievement and higher results.”

This step-by-step, hands-on approach to problem-solving helps children develop the skills they need to tackle challenging tasks effectively and promotes a deeper awareness of the subject. The ten lessons included in Let’s Think Through Literacy! help capture pupils’ imagination in this key subject area. Tasks such as producing speeches and dramas or performing group improvisations provide many opportunities for encouraging creativity which is so essential to the learning process. The book provides teachers with detailed lesson plans and a wealth of photocopiable learning resources to support effective literacy lessons and help raise achievement across the curriculum.

GL Assessment will be publishing the Let’s Think! Handbook later this year. This is an invaluable guide for head teachers, advisers and professional development providers interested in introducing thinking programmes such as cognitive acceleration into the primary classroom to support pupils’ learning.

About GL Assessment (the new name for nferNelson)

GL Assessment is the UK’s leading independent provider of tests and assessment services for education.  It publishes across the 4 -19 age range, with the majority of its assessments designed for 5-14 year-olds.

GL Assessment has an extensive portfolio of print-based tests for education which assess children’s progress in literacy, ability and numeracy and identify a broad spectrum of special educational needs. It offers tests and programmes that support the development of emotional literacy and thinking skills. GL Assessment also provides assessments for use in the Health and Psychology service by clinical psychologists, speech and language therapists and paediatricians.

To increase the scope and flexibility of its educational list, GL Assessment has developed Testwise, a powerful e-assessment portal. Testwise is designed to take the work out of administering, scoring and analysing tests. Learners complete assessments online, and instant scoring gives teachers comprehensive results and analysis at the touch of a button. Many of GL Assessment’s most popular tests are now available online including the Cognitive Abilities Test, Group Reading Test, Suffolk Reading Scale, Progress in Maths and Progress in English.
